GPA Expresses Gratitude to Climate Activists

EDMONTON – Climate activists in Alberta have received a boost from the province’s Green Party. With the planet in the midst of a full-on Climate Emergency, the Greens say they are thankful for the efforts of Albertans to bring awareness and urgency to the situation.

Will Carnegie, Interim Leader of the Green Party of Alberta, says that a disturbing lack of political action is propelling responses from Climate activists. “Both the UCP government and the opposition NDP have disgraced themselves by appearing to be in the hip pocket of Big Oil at a time when the planet is burning. Those who step forward to challenge this sad state of affairs in a peaceful, non-violent way deserve our respect, admiration, and support.”

The Green Party of Alberta recognizes that the oil culture is deeply embedded in the province, thereby making opposition to the continued full-scale reliance on fossil fuels acts of bravery. “There are possible historical comparisons at work. Those who promoted civil rights in the American South during the 1960s faced considerable backlash. Similarly, Climate activists in our province are potentially subject to abuse and vitriol for advocating measures that would bring about a policy and cultural reckoning with the emergency we find ourselves in,” says Carnegie.

Green Party members in Alberta and around the world have been active in protests and marches that have shone a spotlight on the crisis. Recently, Scott Ludlam, a former Austrian Greens Senator for the state of Western Australia, was arrested by authorities for peacefully protesting the Australian government’s role in perpetuating the Climate Emergency.

“We are going on record today to support Climate activists in Alberta because they are putting themselves on the line for all of us who desire a future for our children and grandchildren. We urge everyone who has marched and protested to take out a Green Party of Alberta membership and help elect Green Party members to the Alberta legislature,” says Carnegie.
