GREEN PARTY OF ALBERTA LEADERSHIP RACE OPENS
EDMONTON – It’s now official, the Green Party of Alberta are accepting applications from those wishing to seek the party’s leadership. A deadline of January 28, 2020 has been affixed to the process but those who submit successful applications can begin campaigning immediately.
“This is a great opportunity to help renew our party and the politics of Alberta,” says Will Carnegie, the GPA’s Interim Leader. “The leadership race comes at a time when it is obvious that we as a province need to move beyond the ways of the 20th Century into a new era marked by a shift to a clean, green economy and an inclusive society.”
The Greens are looking for Albertans who exemplify the Green Party values of Sustainability, Social Justice, Respect for Diversity, Ecological Wisdom, Non-violence, and participatory democracy to step up and lead the party.
“We have some very talented people who are already involved in our party but we also welcome newcomers to put together campaigns that can capture the imaginations of Albertans,” says Carnegie, who is also the GPA’s Candidate of Record in Calgary-East.
The Green Party of Alberta Leadership Convention will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2020. People will have until February 26, 2020 to take out new memberships or to renew current memberships to vote for their preferred choice on the ballot. A location for the event has not been determined as of yet.
“There is a tremendous leadership vacuum in Alberta as both parties currently in the provincial legislature are in a perpetual, non-ending rush to support Big Oil and who continue to ignore the change that is required to move us into the 21st century. We need leadership that will be able to continue situate the Greens as a force that provides a visionary pathway for Albertans,” says Carnegie.
The leadership convention in March will be the culmination of the first step of a process that will see the Green Party of Alberta adopt a Co-Leader format. Members voted to support such a move at a recent convention in Red Deer.
Those interested in pursuing the leadership of the Green Party of Alberta should contact Cass Romyn, President of the Green Party of Alberta at: firstname.lastname@example.org or via the phone at: 587-983-9388.
